Matt is a climber. He climbs trees to make them safe by either pruning dead and unwanted branches or removing the tree altogether. The tree maybe dead, unhealthy or dangerous. If Carlie the Ecologist has found any habitat in the trees beforehand, Matt will help to relocate them, if required. Matt has removed koalas from burnt trees and helped them to relocate into other trees where the koala will be safe.

Matt wears a harness that he steps into and buckles up around his waist. This harness has many uses.  Matt safely attaches carabiners, pulley’s and ropes . He has a pole belt that wraps around the tree and attaches back to his harness.  The pole belt allows him to move up and down the tree.  Of course there is Rex his chainsaw.  All these items are attached so they don’t fall to the ground and are easy access to Matt. To help Matt in the tree he has a climbing rope that is thrown over a fork in a branch high up in the tree. This is known as his high point. The rope is then attached to his harness and allows him to swing freely around the tree.

Mad Matt wears lots of protective clothing. Hard hat and ear muffs to protect his head and ears, safety glasses to protect his eyes from flying debris and chainsaw dust, gloves for his hands, long sleeve shirt for sun protection and also long pants called chainsaw chapps.  These pants are made from special material which protect his legs whilst using the chainsaw. He wears steel capped boots which protect his feet and climbing spikes around his boots for climbing trees if he is going to remove that particular tree. He also wears sunscreen on his face to protect himself from the UV rays.

Mad Matt drinks lots of water throughout the day to keep hydrated and eats lots of healthy fruit and vegetables. Mad Matt loves climbing trees!

Onya Owen is the truck driver and drives Tess and Chuckie to all the job sites. Onya Owen greases up Chuckie everyday as part of a daily maintenance routine and this keeps Chuckie happy and healthy whilst mulching all the wood and foliage. Chuckie also has his blades changed regularly so that they are sharp for when the wood and foliage is mulched up. Onya Owen also cleans Tess regularly and looks after her so she keeps tipping the load and refilled with wood chip.

Onya Owen drags branches to Chuckie and feeds them in, he also helps lower branches after Mad Matt has cut them. Onya Owen uses a friction drum for this process. He also cuts branches and timber up on the ground to transport to Chuckie and in pieces Chuckie will be happy to gobble all up.

Trent drives Utie and Stumpy follows behind on the trailer to every job site. Utie is also a tipper and can carry timber away from site. Stumpy grinds the stump at the end of the day. All the guys then rake up and leave each site very clean.

Trent helps the others drag branches to Chuckie, cut up wood and foliage and lower branches. He is also the first aid guy. If any one hurts themselves on site, Trent knows how to fix them up. He has lots of training. He is also trained in aerial rescue so if the climber gets into trouble or hurts himself whilst in the tree, Trent comes to his rescue.

Trent has to look after Utie and Stumpy and does daily maintenance checks on them both. Changing oil, greases up Stumpy so he works smoothly and changes stumpies teeth so that they are sharp when grinding the stumps.

Trent loves being the first aid and rescue guy. He feels very important.
